Nellie: An Ode
O lazy, foolish dog, thy slothfulness
Doth me annoy when time it is
To take thee out for nature’s call.
Explain to me the reason why
Thine eagerness to graze my thigh
With dirty snout doth foment
At the moment I am cleanest.
Verily, thy pants o’er wagging tongue,
Thy sniffs through leathery nose,
Thy ceaseless barks incite in me
Emotions mixed in quality.
Yet in thine eyes of deepest brown
I see the depths of loyalty
That are the canine’s crown,
And so I say to thee, Nellie:
“Good dog!”
